Joshua 5:13-15
Background on Joshua
- Author: Not really sure
- Title: Named after the leading person in the story.
- Date: late second 1405-1385 B.C.
- Purpose: To explain the events surrounding Israel’s capture and settlement of the land of Canaan. The fulfillment of God’s promises.
Do you believe God is in control?
God’s control is displayed by His presence among us.
- V.13
- In route to Jericho, to the place He was called to go…God’s presence was with him.
- Sovereignty – God’s complete control over His creation.
- Do we live in such a way that we are aware of His presence among us?
- Deuteronomy 31:8 – It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
- Providence – “God is continually involved with all created things in such a way that He keeps them existing and maintaining the properties with which He created them; cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do; and directs them to fulfill His purposes.” – Wayne Grudem
- Job 37:4-11 READ.
God’s control shows His glory and our worship.

- Job 37:14-24
- Psalm 72:19 – Blessed be his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory! Amen and Amen!
- This commander of the army could have very well been Jesus.
- sar - chieftain, chief, ruler, official, captain, prince
- Hebrews 2:10 – For it became him, for whom [are] all things, and by whom [are] all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. – KJV
- Acts 5:31 – He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. – NASB
- 1 Peter 5:4 – And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. ESV
- Joshua worshipped because he was in the presence of God. What do we do when we are in His presence?
“A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling ‘darkness’ on the wall of his cell…” – CS Lewis
God’s control sparks holy living.
- V.15
- Exodus 3:5 – Then He said, “Do not come near here; remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
- Holy – Qadosh – to be sacredly set apart.
- God’s sovereignty over our lives should draw us to holiness.
- 1 Peter 1:15-16 – but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
- When we set ourselves apart from the fallen sins of this culture, we glorify His sovereignty.
- Are you set apart?
