Deuteronomy 5:1-21

Background on Deuteronomy

  • Author: Moses and others (traditional view, based on John 5:46)
  • Title: from the Greek word meaning “second law”
  • Date: roughly around 15th or 13th century BC
  • Purpose: The final messages from Moses to the people of God. The messages consisted of poetic worship, instructive commands, and prophetic warnings.

1st Period – God wants our worship.

  • Deuteronomy 5:7
  • Exodus 20:3
  • Acts 14:15 – “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them”
  • True Worship to the True Godhead; led by the Spirit, loved in the Son, and lifted up to the Father is the foundation for every word of the Bible.
  • What do you worship?

2nd Period – God wants our attention.

  • Deuteronomy 5:8-10
  • Exodus 20:4
  • 1 John 5:21 –“Little children, keep yourselves from idols.”
  • We are easily distracted people. We get obsessed with an idol…and lose sight on the fact that our attention is not on the One that deserves it.
  • We give attention to Him, because He has showered us with undeserved love. V. 10 – Where can we get this return from any idol we set up?

3rd Period – God wants our words.

  • Deuteronomy 5:11
  • Exodus 20:7
  • James 5:12 – “But above all, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation.”
  • Matthew 5:34 “But I say to you, make no oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God
  • “in vain” - la·sha·ve; 7723 emptiness, vanity
  • Using God’s name in an empty way is kind of like the following:
  • The God card in break ups. (funny example, I hope)
  • Placing His Name in your vocabulary in a way that doesn’t honor Him.
  • Not following through with your commitments you made…to Him.
  • “I’ll pray for you.” Well…do you?

4th Period – God wants our rest.

  • Deuteronomy 5:12-15
  • Exodus 20:8
  • This is the only commandment that is nullified in Christ.
  • Colossians 2:16
  • Matthew 12:8 – “For the Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”
  • God wants our rest in His Son. We must lean on His grace and sovereign authority over our lives. He has liberated us from our sins. This command eliminates our need to seek “self-help.”

5th Period – God wants our honor for our parents

  • Deuteronomy 5:16
  • Exodus 20:12
  • Colossians 3:20 – “Children, be obedient to your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord”
  • Honoring our parents is honoring our Father in glory. As He has given us life, our parents provide for our life daily. (in cases where there are no parents…whoever is raising you).

6th Period – God wants our love for others.

  • Deuteronomy 5:17
  • Exodus 20:13
  • 1 John 3:15 – “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”
  • Hatred is murder, according to Jesus in Matthew 5:21-24
  • If we hate, we sin. God wants our love to shine to others.

7th Period – God wants our purity

  • Deuteronomy 5:18
  • Exodus 20:14
  • Matthew 5:27-28 – “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
  • God wants us to be pure. God wants us to live in purity. Perhaps we should take Job’s words in Job 31:1 – “I have made a covenant with my eyes.”

8th Period – God wants our true integrity

  • Deuteronomy 5:19
  • Exodus 20:15
  • Ephesians 4:28 – “Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need”
  • God wants integrity. With exams, with illegal downloads, etc.

9th Period –God wants our honesty.

  • Deuteronomy 5:20
  • Exodus 20:16
  • Colossians 3:9-10 – “Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old selfd with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator”
  • We tend to be very dishonest people. Stop lying. Nobody really is impressed.

10th Period –God wants our satisfaction.

  • Deuteronomy 5:21
  • Exodus 20:17
  • Ephesians 5:3 – “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.”
  • Sin comes when we find satisfaction in vain things or people that give no eternal satisfaction.
  • God wants us to be fully satisfied in Him. This will eliminate our temptation to look at others stuff…or people…and want them above God.
  • Matthew 5:17 Revisit. Jesus came to fulfill the law. How?
  1. Jesus glorified the Father.
  2. Jesus had his attention on the Father.
  3. Jesus honored the Father with His words
  4. Jesus found rest in His Father’s presence
  5. Jesus honored His Father will willing obedience.
  6. Jesus loved others; evidenced by His blood
  7. Jesus was pure, sinless, and above reproach
  8. Jesus showed perfect integrity with a question on taxes
  9. Jesus is the truth
  10. Jesus is satisfied with His Father.

In Christ, you can pass. Apart from Christ, you will fail. – Galatians 3:24
